Er Rational musings #256
The Japanese have invented below mentioned systems, and some of them have had ruled the industry, for decades.
~ Total Quality Management (TQM) is a management approach that has steadily become more popular. Total quality is a description of the culture, attitude and organization of a company that strives to provide customers with products and services, that satisfy their needs.
~ Lean manufacturing or lean production is a systematic method for the elimination of waste within a manufacturing system. Lean also takes into account waste created through over burden and waste created through unevenness in work loads.
~ Kaizen is the practice of continuous improvement. Kaizen was the Key to Japan's Competitive Succes. Today Kaizen is recognized worldwide as an important pillar of an organization's long-term competitive strategy.
~ Just In Time (JIT) main aim is elimination of inventories, but it's NOT an inventory control system—but a way of thinking, working and management to eliminate wastes in the manufacturing process'.
~ Just In Case (JIC), keeps extra inventories to be used in case of disruptions (e.g., scrap, rework, equipment breakdowns, late deliveries), whereas JIT continually reduces such inventory buffers by continually attacking causes of disruptions.
~ Kanban is a system to control the logistical chain from a production point of view, and is an inventory control system. Kanban was a system to improve and maintain a high level of production. Kan ban is one method to achieve JIT.
We have used @ll these techniques. Each one has it's merits/demerits.
