Er Rational musings #71
Many people around the world celebrate Halloween, which occurs annually on October 31. It is the day before All Saint's Day and is also sometimes called All Hallows’ Eve and Hallowmas Eve.
A Halloween date marks the start of winter and the new year. It was believed that the spirits of the dead could return to the earth around this time. It's to pray for the dead and honour the saints.
Costume parties are held where people dress as witches, ghosts, and animal figures associated with Halloween, or as fictitious characters from horror films, television shows or books. Costume parties are often held at people’s homes, a hired venue, or venues that are supposedly haunted.
It has made small noticeable inroads in India, this time. I have come across people who have arranged such parties today. Some have, even changed their Facebook profile pic or Whatsapp DP accordingly!
It's one more Classic example of cultural invasion of the West. @fter 31st December's new year's celebrations, Father's/Mother's Day, and more dominantly a Valentine Day, Western culture is getting popular in youths here!
Everyone yearns for something newer n neo occassions for enjoyment, a welcome break from daily boring drill-routine!
But still. Our own desi festivals like Diwali, Dussehra, Padva, Holi, Makar Sankrant, Dahi Handi, Ganapati, etc beware.
