$even Commandments.......
$ Refuse to tow the line.
$ Refuse to carry out free errands.
$ Refuse to believe without actually 'seeing'.
$ Refuse to get bogged down by seemingly high personalities.
$ Refuse to trust blindfoldedly.
$ Refuse to volunteer, un-voluntrarily.
And
$ Refuse to opine unless n until @sked for.
Difference would be both ways, a Dual dimension!
False, Pretenders, Back stabbers vis a vis True, Pals, Comrades in arms!

Each n every time, I leave this great city, looking out the windows of Shivneri, my mind fills with reminiscences of past 35 years.
The attraction started with our bicycle trips from Mulund to Pune in 1978-79-80s. With very little money on person, we have had a few visits on cycles. A whole day spent to reach Pune peddling on old Mumbai Pune highway NH-4, two lane, dotted with big trees on both sides! And funny thing is that, we used to walk the entire khandala ghat section tucking along, pulling our cycles, for 3 hours alone. Cycles were ordinary, no gears. Then we would stay in lodge. On few occassions, have peddled our way to Sinhagad, park our cycles at the bottom n have had quick treks.
During college days and first few years of employment, frequency of visits increased. What with great many - various friend circles n @ll.
Few highlights...
~ Amrut tulya tea stalls on Tilak Rd, Laxmi Rd, Furgusson Rd.
~ Old bungalows of Prabhat Rd, old 'waade' of Sadashiv Peth, Shanivar Peth.
~ Quarter system Bars.
~ Hotel Vaishali, Roopali.
~ Hotel Gokul (now closed, was at Deccan. Greatest Thaalipeeth Loni on Earth!)
~ Alka talkies, Rahul talkies erc.
~ Sarasbaug, Peshave Park, Empress Garden.
~ Irani joints like Goodluck, Ideal etc.
~ Trips to Pune by evening train, whole night roaming during Ganeshotsav, with no sleep n catching early morning train back to Mumbai.
~ Riding M-50 or Bajaj 150 or even Luna (borrowed from some relative or friend).
~ Trademark Vada paavs.
~ Manikbaug Industrial Estate on Sinhagad Rd, Gul tekdi, Pashan, Katraj, Hadapsar were far off places for us, those times.
And now the visits continue... new friends, new acquantances, new places, new purposes, new food joints, new vehicles, new attractions @ll @round!
But with old enthusiasm, pep n vigour!
Presently, we have mammoth growth on all sides.
Still, it's a lovable, likeable, n liveable city.

Cool.

Corporate Jugglery
It's very interesting to note how a typical Labour department of a private corporate house has moved to 'People's office'.
A Labour officer of yore is now called as a People's officer. Their main function of Recruiting right personnel of right profile for right job, remained same. Over the years, other activities like attendance, payroll, welfare, medical, training, development, conducting outbound programmes, arranging study tours, and other such functions were added to Human Resource Department! and most importantly, Appraisal of the employees/performance based rewards, remained most crucial, as far as employee is concerned.
A lot many Appraisal sysyems were used and are still being evolved. Basically, all were kept so confusing n complicated n cumbersome to make it most clash-some, as far as most of the general employee is concerned.
The PLR (Performance Linked Reward) or PLI (Performance Linked Incentive) or annual appraisal, became known as a modern Jugglery, made to push forward ONLY blue eyed boys of the bosses! These smart subordinates were rewarded for their uncanny ability of keeping the boss happy at the right time! Others equally toiled, made sincere efforts, were useful for the growth of the organization, and were entrusted more n more responsibility. But their folly? Not in Boss' good books. Hence, year after year these efficient, hard working but silent workaholics were cleverly kept on leash, using over-smart Appraisal systems!
So much so for the 'People's office' read HRD!!

Our beloved Bharat is a dumping yard for westerners. One classic example:First they sold you ordinary dabba TV of EC or Dianora make in 1980s,Then flat screen, then LCD, then LED, then HD TVs & so on. With the advent of TVs & personal computers we did use additional screen which we used to clip on the PC monitor. (Remember? During initial years...)To reduce radiation & to protect your eyes..now we don't use it...With the advent of mobile phones, during initial years there was so called fear that by keeping cell phone in pockets may damage either your kidneys or heart..remember? Now we handle cellphones any which way we like... With mobiles came Cell towers on top of buildings.. now there is an apprehension about radiation from mobile towers!!Technological advancements vis a vis fear psychosis vis a vis improvements...Never(ever) ending processes...

It's said that Attitude is @bove @ll; that the 'Right' attitude shall take you to places n make wonders!
I agree, fully.
"Timing", at the same 'TIME' is equally vital, in my opinion.
If the Timing is perfect, coupled with rest of the best qualities, n0thing can stop you.
Attitude, Positive Thinking, Presentation skills, Leadership quality, Communication skills, and even Listening ability, if not displayed at Right Time, shall make the impact, no doubt. But with correct Timing, even the seemingly lost causes can be Won.
For example, 'when' to keep quiet and 'when' to speak, with right Attitude, can Make or Break the situation!
@lways wait for the Right Time as there is a Time for everything.
And as the saying goes 'Strike when the Iron is hot' n then, 'Make hay while the Sun shines!'

Hawking zone(!)s were
earmarked n separated out n formed a few years back, as per honourable Court's
guidelines. 'Authorised' hawkers were supposed to do business from here. What's
the reality, but?
Meaning of a 'Hawker' is a
person who travels from place to place selling Goods!
In contrast, we have @lmost all roads,
be it a market road or station road or a bylane or an arterial road, space
reservations all @round. At the end of the days business, the vendors just pack
up their mart in makeshift wrapping, keeping their wares covered n secured thru
night, only to restart all over again the next day, for next month, for next
year.. forever, till the time he/she 'manages' the show! Moreover, we find a
vegetable vendor during early morning, and a bangles seller in evening at same
place! So they keep the Location secured! N different business activities are
carried out at different business hours!
Less said about mushrooming
'khau gallies' the better! South Indian smacks like Idli Wada, Upma - Pohe,
Ayurvedic juices, Wada paav, Samosa-Bhaji-Pattice, Dabeli, Puri bhaaji, Paav
bhaaji, Bhurji-Omellete, Chat items like Bhel-pani puri, Tawa pulao-Biryani,
Non veg items, Chinese recipies, to full fledged meals, we have it @ll in

Many railway commuters,
right from Ambernath/Badlapur/Kalyan/Thane/Mulund to Vikhroli/Ghatkopar on
central line and from as far as Dahanu/Palghar/Dahisar/Borivali/Andheri to
Khar/Bandra on western line, travel upto railway station on their two wheeler,
park the same nearby and proceed to work. These people are @lways on the
lookout for new parking space near to the respective station, which is free.
This parking place gets established, over a period of time. The irony is that the traffic police declare such parking
unauthorized, suddenly, without rhyme or reason, inconveniencing lacs of law
abiding citizens!
It goes without saying that the
space/location freed by such 'No Parking' rule, is gobbled up by illegal
hawkers n road eateries @ll @round!
So much so for the law
abiding daily railway commuters!

~We don't find and can't have ground floor
flats now. It's 'passe' due to new parking rules and compulsions of layout
proposal.
~We don't have square shaped main hall. It's 'passe' as dining table area intrudes awkwardly into main sitting room, which invariably becomes 'L' shaped.
~We don't have a kitchen which can accommodate (!) a dining table (!). It's 'passe' as we have so small aisle available as a kitchen area that ONLY one or two (!) persons can barely stand and cook.
~We don't find and can't have separate bathroom n toilet. It's 'passe' due to space crunch. Similarly a passage or verandah within a flat is 'passe'. Similarly a loft or a mini storage space over a bath room is 'passe'
~We don't have and cant't find a clear height of more than 9 or nine n half feet. It's 'passe' due to limitations on overall building structure height.
~We do have to turn ON the lights even during day time. Natural lighting n ventilation is 'passe' due to impossibility of building layout.
~And last but not the least, an apartment or a society as a whole, without a watchman or security is 'passe', but for obvious reasons!

This is similar to Maharashtra Times campaign during Navaratri utsav since last few years. Gimmic is that they allocate 9 colours for 9 days and @ll fall for it! So we get @ll n sundry working ladies/of various 'mandals' wearing respective colour dress/saree on those particular day!

Lots of awards, 'puraskaar' for renowned
personalities. As per detailed news reports in Marathi newspapers, so many
organizations announce such recognitions. What pains, pinches n stumps me is
that the meager n paltry cash component along with memento. (for example, ₹5000
or 10000/- cash!! and memento!).
Do these stalwarts not deserve any respectable
figure in line with contemporary situation? Agreed that the amount is only
symbolic, but still, something somewhat??!!

India successfully launches indiginously built
Geo Satellite Launch Vehicle MK 3. ISRO is moving ahead slowly n steadily, be
it Moon mission or mission Mars. Kudos!
We need to make progress regarding basic sciences, but. It is required that Food, Shelter, Farming, Energy, Transport, Water resource, in short, all basic necessities for basic living needs to be addressed scientifically.
For example, let there be invention of new Metal (like Rearden Metal, courtesy Atlas Shrugged) which would be lighter n cheaper but stronger than steel; let there be invention of new Motor (like the one invented by John Galt, courtesy Atlas Shrugged) which would not need ANY fossil fuel except AIR (!); let there be invention of new Receiver Dish of the size of Cable TV dish antennae which would be fitted for each n every household to receive electric supply thru waves to cater to our power needs; let there be invention of Seeds n Fertilizer which would need only a teaspoonful (!) of water to grow; let there be invention of such magnitude which will transform the lives.
Simple, cheaper, efficient n abundant living sources are the need of the hour.

Taken for granted is a slang used to underestimate the value. In other words, to expect someone or something to be always available (such as to serve, without the need to give recognition or thanks!)
The imminent danger or fallout of TFG would be to discard, ignore, throw away, when the NEED of the moment is fulfilled!
I equate TFG with a Rock of Gibraltar, who will @lways stand by, n hold fort.
TFG shall get it's due reward, respect and reverence in due course of time, no doubt @bout it.

flourishing!

New born babies have one advantage nowadays.
Probable names of to-be-born baby is finalised in advance and right from first
day, babies get called by their maiden names. (so the proud newly born parents
insist!); and therefore, it's a strict no-no for 'sonya / babu / chhakuli /
manu / pillu etc etc. Naming ceremony and rest of the celebrations /
formalities follow in leisure !!Times change, no surprises / secrets;
convenience and westernisation matters.
Observations #6
New car launches are advertised thru media wth
great noise. Invariably cost of the vehicle is mentioned as "ex showroom
New Delhi". It's riduculous and meaningless when we, in Mumbai, read it in
newspapers. What is the relevance? Why can't they give 'ex showroom
Mumbai" price!?!

It's becoming more difficult to locate good old

are Thane, Mulund, Girgaum and that's all! Western suburbs are strict no no as
far as this simple but effective nutritious liquid is considered.

Swachha Bharat abhiyaan
City Mumbai, Pune, Nashik, Aurangabad, Kolhapur, Nagpur or for that matter, any city in our Maharashtra have roads of sufficient width. But, we have shop keepers on both side intruding upon (whatever available footpaths), a roadside vendor either having a tapari or squatting on footpaths, then we have both side parking of cars/two wheelers, then people walking on both sides, and then, Lastly, vehicles plying on whatever strip in the middle available!
Only if, we all (@ll stakeholders) can act most responsibility n sensibly n maintain discipline, still we can salvage the burgeoning situation!

home yesterniight. Great evening spent with old time pal n his wife, who are
moving out of Mumbai. Fantastic drinking session ending with delicious home
made non veg meal. Ice cream n paan followed. All this, without drinking a
single drop of my erstwhile favourite 'thing'. I have called it a day, forever,
so far as drinks are concerned.
The variety of
Whiskey, Vodka, Rum, Gin n Beer has given me so much pleasure over the last 3 decades!
Absolute salute to @ll my past parties; alone, alongwith best friends, in a
group, at various places in India n abroad, at all times of days n nights, at
various locations, hundreds of hotels, in many moods, quick n long restive
sessions, on beaches, on terraces, balconies, dhabas, star hotels, on roadside,
in vehicle, in train, in aeroplane, in plastic cups/glasses, without diluting,
a neat, patiala, all sorts, scotch to bhaang, wow, this can go on n on.
I arrange, attend,
participate, enjoy with same zest n enthusiasm, I don't drink now!
I love you still!

Memoir #4
Those were Raju's
early days in his career. He was slowly becoming popular n famous.
I had an opportunity
to participate in महाराष्ट्र राज्य नाट्य स्पर्धा, in a play written n directed by him. It was so much
fun, it was more than 30 years back!, our whole group of SanjayK, ManojN,
SaumitraG, SatishM, SanjuA etc used to practice at Mulund, in the evenings. And
one soon to be famous personality Ms Shirin (!) was also in lead role. Rest is
history..(so far as Raju's personal life is concerned, but it @ll started in
our नाटक!!)
I did smoke a bidi,
yes bidi, on the live show on stage at Gadkari Rangayatan, Thane! I wanted to,
desperately, just for the sake of showing in front of audience which
incidentally included my parents!

And now, who will
allow you to smoke in theatres or their premises, let alone on stage??!
But I have!☺☺

Memoir #3
During 1979-80, in
our 9th n 10th standard, our quartet comprising myself, SaumitraG, ShashankB
and SanjuA, have made few trips to Pune, Alibaug and Nashik on bicycle!
For example, we used to leave Mulund at 6 am and reach Pune by 6 pm ! 12 hours of road cycling!
~ I had normal black coloured cycle, without gears!
~ Stray dogs would bark and race towards us in the wee hours of the morning
when we used to pass thru Thane / Kalwa / Taloja!
~ Panvel was our breakfast point. One of my relative, uncle used to stay near old Bombay Pune Road. Kaku would prepare something like pohe, for four of us!
~ Tyre puncture was routine; we used to carry complete kit of spanners n @ll along with air pump!
~ Khandala ghat was very very difficult. It used to take us @ 3 hours alone, to get over the ghat section! Sometimes, we used to get hold of a chain hooked n dangling on backside of truck to take us upwards, albeit a few metres!
~ Patch between Lonavala and Chinchwad was most scenic. There were big trees on both sides of the road; road itself was only 2 lane, one towards Pune and other in opposite direction!
~ We used to rest in between, along the road side. Smoke cigarettes and move on!
~ We used to stay in filthy (!) lodge sometimes! (old style, cot system, but what a comfort @fter whole days cycling!), n had only usal-paav for dinner, sometimes! (Great taste, but!)
~ 1 or 2 quarters were more than enough! for me, cigarette was inseparable!
~ So much fun! @ 150 Kms in 12 hours! Complete day spent!
~ Those were the days!

Business tips #2
E-Retailing is booming in India. and
booming at what speed and volume?!
I am surprised to note that
no major FMCG or for that matter any other major consumer goods product company
has not yet thought of joining the bandwagon!
We have Snapdeal, Flipkart, Amazon, eBay, Jabong, Myntra, Yebhi, Pepperfry etc making hay while the sun shines; not to mention sundries like OLX and Quikr.
Companies, apart from spending huge
budget on massive dealer network on ground, should offer their products ONLINE
thru their home page - portal. How come nobody has thought of taking this
simple, effective but futuristic marketing initiative? OK, we do have insurance
companies and certain others offering their 'services' ONLINE, majority of
consumer giants have been tardy in taking this step.
Establish ONLINE business
sale yourself, no need to cry loud about dealer business getting affected by
e-Retailers! Huge potential.....
